This week: driverless pods, online turbulence and Justin Bieber

This week a large online company got into some turbulence, we received additional input on our new airport review, Heathrow leapt into the future and a star was spotted at a Californian airport. Surely this is juicy enough for you to read on, right?

Earlier in the week Google – for once – got into some trouble when the media learnt that Google’s new flight search had the World Trade Center listed as an unavailable destination airport for New York City-bound flights. Gizmodo wrote that Google’s flight search uses International Air Transport Association and International Civil Aviation Organization codes to generate its list of airports, but Google didn’t know that decommissioned airports remained in the list until after the service was live. Certainly this was a very embarrassing moment for the online giant, that’s for sure!

When we published our feature article for the week – the review of Syracuse airport (IATA: SYR) – on Wednesday, we received quite a few comments about verdict of it being a rather boring airport. Most people agreed with our view, but we also got some additional tips we – yes it happens – failed to spot: one reader asked us whether we noticed that “during the warm months they have a flock of plastic pink flamingo between the runways and during the winter it is a flock of penguins”? What a cute idea – can anyone send us some photos?

Also during the week, our friends at Passenger Terminal Today reported that London’s Heathrow (IATA: LHR; LD hub page) officially unveiled its driverless pod system. The personal rapid transport system consists of 21 low energy, battery powered, driverless, zero emission vehicles capable of carrying four passengers and their luggage along a dedicated 3.8km guide way.

And finally to our entertainment piece of the week. This time the story comes from the Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX; LD hub page) and proofs our tip from the review of this large airport that it’s actually possible to spot celebrities there: ‘Just Jared Jr.’ published pictures of Justin Bieber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez going through customs on their way to a flight out of LAX.

With that, have an exciting new week – of course hassle free and safe!
