This week: festive season recap

It’s a new year and we’re back in action. We trust, you all had a nice Christmas and a Happy New Year. On our end, even though we took a break from publishing, loyal followers would know that we didn’t shut our eyes for interesting airport news. In fact we published 15 tweets of interesting developments through our Twitter account over the past 2 weeks. Let us now recap the most interesting or important ones.

The end of a year always brings interesting best-of lists. Two of those caught our eyes: The first one reveals the 22 most annoying U.S. airport security points – read the story on the Huffington Post website. The second one came from USA Today and revealed the best new airport amenities in 2012. Among them were yoga rooms, better food or TSA pre-checks.

The past two weeks also saw a few hefty delays. Many of us would have heard of the fierce winter storms in the United States causing havoc for many travellers over the Xmas period. One example reached us from Dallas when on the 26th December the Dallas News wrote that about 1,000 stranded airline passengers camped out overnight at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). They were stuck at the airport after 414 flights were cancelled the previous night due to a winter storm in the Midwest and snow in the Dallas-area.

But even news about airport advancements or airport name changes didn’t stop coming in over the festive season. The Huffington Post revealed on the 2nd January that Dubai Airports said it has opened the world’s first concourse entirely dedicated to the Airbus A380, with an Emirates airlines flight making the maiden voyage to London’s Heathrow Airport. According to the article, four of 20 gates at Concourse A were in operation Wednesday at Dubai International’s Terminal 3 (DXB).

Then there was widespread news that Birmingham Airport (BHX) in the United Kingdom could be renamed after Ozzy Osbourne. The Birmingham Mail broke the story on the 27th December by writing that the Boss of Birmingham’s Big Bear Music calls for tribute to Black Sabbath singer after naming of John Lennon Airport in Liverpool. Apparently the city council found the idea “interesting”. Let’s wait and see!

Finally there also were various articles you could broadly categorize under “entertainment” or even “gossip” – yes, we know, these are the ones you never ever read. Ever. So, starting this round, the Examiner brought us a story titled ‘Man wears 70 items of clothing to avoid extra baggage fees at airport’. Well, this headline really says it all, but feel free to read the full story here.

The other two articles were even backed up with a video. And we urge you to watch them both as they are quite different yet intriguingly entertaining alike! The first one shows Twilight Star Bronson Pelletier peeing on the carpet at LAX Airport before getting arrested. This story came from E! Online that also has the video.

And the other one came from Yahoo! News showing a girl dancing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as if no one was watching (there must be something special with that airport – peeing, dancing; what’s next?). Anyway, the video is quite hilarious and surely leaves you with a smile on your face:

That’s all from us in this first airport news in 2013. Save travels!
